Le projet Zebrastraat se veut un endroit particulier où on aime habiter, qu’on aime visiter et où on ne demande qu’à retourner.
Notre société est profondément fragmentée. Hébergement, culture et économie sont cloisonnés, non seulement sur le plan politique mais aussi dans l’espace; comme si tout les séparait, comme si l’un excluait l’autre.
La Fondation Liedts-Meesen veut démontrer qu’il est possible de combiner ces trois activités, et d’une façon enrichissante.
“Le Cirk“ s’avère être le laboratoire nécessaire à cette expérience sociale unique.
En concevant en 1906 le site dans la rue du Zèbre à Gand, l’architecte urbain Charles Van Rysselberge imagina le premier “immeuble à appartements pour ouvriers“ d’Europe.
Mais à la fin des années ’90, “Le Cirk“ était désespérément usé. Sous la poussière de la décrépitude la Fondation sut reconnaître une perle rare.
Aussi, avec autant de dynamisme que de respect pour l’architecture originale, “Le Cirk“ fut rénové. Le résultat est un complexe moderne de 72 habitations, un espace multifonctionnel pour rencontres et réceptions, 5 salles de conférence et 750m² d’espaces d’exposition, le tout agencé autour d’un bassin oval qui peut se transformer en 24 heures en espace temporaire unique pour manifestations.
Depuis, le Zebrastraat revit. Managers et responsables politiques s’y rencontrent dans des circonstances optimales, la jeunesse y fait des découvertes culturelles et les habitants y vivent harmonieusement. Dessein accompli.
A unique combination of living, meeting and experiencing.
The Zebrastraat wants to be a special place, where tenants live with pleasure and visitors gladly come, intending to return soon.
Our Society is through and through fragmented. Accommodation, culture and economy get completely isolated from one another – not only when we are speaking about policy but as well talking about area planning – so that it looks as if they have nothing to do with one another, yes even appear to be excluding one another.
The Foundation Liedts-Meesen wants to prove that a combination of these three activities is certainly achievable and can even be enriching. The laboratory that was necessary for this unique social experiment, was found in “De Cirk”. In 1906 the city architect of Ghent Charles van Rysselberghe designed at the site of the Zebrastraat the first “workers apartments” of Europe, but at the end of the nineties “De Cirk” was hopelessly decrepit. The shadow of the demolition hammer was already hanging above the Zebrastraat, when the Foundation recognized a shiny pearl underneath the dust.
With as much decisiveness as respect for the original architecture “De Cirk” was renovated. The result is a modern site with 72 residences, a multifunctional meeting- and reception space, 5 conference rooms and 750 m² exhibition space. All of this is located around an oval shaped water surface that in less than 24 hours makes room for a unique temporary event space.
Since the renovation life in the Zebrastraat is vibrant again. Managers and policy makers meet each other in the most comfortable circumstances, young people do cultural discoveries, the inhabitants live together harmonious and … that was what we aimed for.
Een unieke combinatie van wonen, ontmoeten en beleven
De Zebrastraat wil een speciale plaats zijn, waar huurders graag wonen en bezoekers graag komen, vast van plan om vlug terug te keren.
Onze samenleving is door en door gefragmenteerd. Huisvesting, cultuur en economie worden volledig van elkaar afgezonderd – niet alleen beleidsmatig maar ook ruimtelijk – zodat het lijkt alsof ze niets met elkaar te maken hebben; ja zelfs alsof ze elkaar zouden uitsluiten.
De Stichting Liedts-Meesen wil aantonen dat een combinatie van deze drie activiteiten wel degelijk haalbaar is en zelfs verrijkend kan zijn. Het laboratorium dat nodig was voor dit uniek sociaal experiment, werd gevonden in "De Cirk". In 1906 ontwierp de Gentse stadsarchitect Charles Van Rysselberghe met deze site in de Zebrastraat de eerste "werkersappartementen" van Europa, maar tegen het eind van de jaren '90 was "De Cirk" hopeloos uitgeleefd. De schaduw van de sloophamer hing al over de Zebrastraat toen de Stichting onder het stof een blinkende parel herkende.
Met evenveel daadkracht als respect voor de oorspronkelijke architectuur, werd "De Cirk" gerenoveerd. Het resultaat is een moderne site met 72 woningen, een multifunctionele ontmoetings- en receptieruimte, 5 conferentiezalen en 750 m² tentoonstellingsruimte; dit alles gelegen rond een ovaalvormig wateroppervlak dat in nauwelijks 24 uur plaats maakt voor een unieke tijdelijke evenementenruimte.
In de Zebrastraat bruist het sindsdien weer van het leven. Managers en beleidsmakers ontmoeten elkaar in de meest optimale omstandigheden, jonge mensen doen culturele ontdekkingen, de bewoners leven harmonieus samen … en dat was precies de bedoeling.
