La boucle d'Hilbert

La boucle d'Hilbert (2018) by Faoud Bouchoucha

About the artwork

La boucle d'Hilbert consists of a glass cylinder filled with powder and subjected to a continuous rotation. It is a repetitive reaction that is never identical. The artist compares this movement with the accumulative loops of transcendental music. A mountainous surface forms and reforms continuously.

Fouad Bouchoucha's work does not often refer to art history, but to the world of music and sound. "One would better understand his oeuvre by putting one's head in a sound system."
In his oeuvre, for example, he focuses on autotuning and the creation of the illusion of speed that results from it. The installation of peculiar sound systems contribute to the emergence of this speed illusion; these systems in eight tuned cars were carefully examined by Bouchoucha.

His total oeuvre can be seen as an iconography of sound power, a development of a repertoire of forms created by sound. He conducts research on the limits of musical power and visualises the potential of sound without using sound itself. His findings take the form of both installations and performances.
